About Mike Caldwell
The Person Behind The Marketing Medic
Former paramedic. Business owner. Author and speaker. Three-time Ironman finisher. Off-grid by choice.
I’m Mike Caldwell. My working life has included caring for patients, managing an air ambulance base, building businesses, and speaking to audiences about marketing and understanding people.
Away from that work, I live with my wife, Monique, on 164 acres in the Gatineau Hills. We converted a former sawmill into our off-grid home—a place that has also become home to outdoor adventures, events, rescue animals, and plenty of projects.
This is a little of the story behind the name.

Before Marketing, There Was Emergency Medicine
I spent 12 years as a paramedic, including work as a flight paramedic and managing an air ambulance base in Ottawa.
That career involved caring for people during difficult moments, working closely with a team, and taking responsibility when decisions mattered.
One habit stayed with me: step back and assess the whole situation. The most obvious symptom may be important without telling you everything you need to know.
It is part of how I think today, but emergency medicine was also a substantial chapter of my life in its own right.

A Former Sawmill Became Our Home
Monique and I have made our home on 164 acres in the Gatineau Hills, north of Ottawa. We converted a former sawmill into an off-grid home, with forest, trails, and room for the animals and activities that are part of our everyday life.
I’m hands-on with the property—from solar power and building projects to milling lumber and maintaining trails. I’ve also taught off-grid solar at college.
It is a life with plenty to look after, but it gives us something we value: the freedom to shape how we live and spend our time.
Dogs, horses, trail runs, horseback rides, and time on the water are part of that picture. So is the next project, which rarely seems to be far away.

Businesses I’ve Built and Run Myself
Alongside The Marketing Medic, I’ve built businesses around the property and the experiences people can have here. They have involved different audiences, different expectations, and a great deal of practical work.

Mad Trapper
My trail and snowshoe racing business brings people together for challenging courses and a welcoming community. It combines my love of the outdoors with the work of creating an event people want to return to.

The Ark Outdoor Education
Through The Ark, I’ve created outdoor education experiences for students—opportunities to learn practical skills, work together, and discover what they can do beyond the classroom.

Weddings at The Ark
Monique and I also operated a wedding venue at our home. Welcoming couples and their guests was another chapter in the property’s story, bringing a very different kind of event to the same setting.

Cliffside Cabin
Our property also includes Cliffside Cabin, a getaway that brings together the things we enjoy about being here: a forest setting, privacy, and time outdoors.
MY EARLIER CLIENT WORK
From Running My Own Businesses to Growing Others
Before I began helping law firms with AI visibility, I managed paid advertising for business owners. Two projects stand out for me.

The campaigns I ran for a bootcamp gym generated $36 in revenue for every $1 spent on advertising. What I remember most is that the two owners were able to quit their day jobs and run the gym full time.
Outcome: Owners transitioned to running their gym full time
For a real estate coaching client, I managed $1 million in ad spend. Those campaigns generated over $3 million in revenue for the coaching business.

Three Ironman Finishes—and Plenty of Time Outside
I’ve completed three Ironman triathlons. Training for and finishing those events has been a significant part of my life outside work.
These days, being active also means trail running, horseback riding, water activities, and the physical work that comes with our property.
I enjoy a challenge, but I also enjoy simply being outside.

From Conversations to Conference Stages
Speaking has become another part of my work. I’ve appeared on TEDx and TAG Talks stages and spoken at Savant eCommerce events in Toronto and New York.
I enjoy the opportunity to share ideas, hear people’s questions, and make a topic understandable to the people in the room.
My speaking work includes Empathic Marketing, business messaging, and AI visibility.

Putting Empathic Marketing Into Words
I wrote Empathic Marketing to share the approach at the centre of my marketing work: understand the person you want to reach before deciding what to say.
The book brings that thinking together in a form readers can explore and apply to their own businesses.

For law firms, that means helping connect genuine expertise with the people looking for it.
You can explore the details of that work elsewhere on this site. Here, I wanted you to meet the person you would be working with.
