Ottawa Law Firm Case Study
From Client Understanding to AI Visibility
How I connected one law firm’s expertise with the people, problems, and decisions its website needed to address.
I’m Mike Caldwell, founder of The Marketing Medic. For an Ottawa-based law firm, I developed the strategy, messaging, content structure, schema, and AI visibility foundation behind its website.
The work connected the lawyer’s experience with the legal problems he handles, the jurisdiction he serves, and the prospective clients seeking guidance.
This case study explains the decisions behind that work—and how I assessed what happened afterward.
Confidentiality note: The firm and lawyer are not named in this case study. It describes the strategy and implementation behind the project without reproducing confidential client submissions.

Strategy and implementation by Mike Caldwell
Start With the Person Who Needs a Lawyer
Someone researching an investment loss or an insurance dispute may not know the right legal terminology. They may be trying to understand what happened, whether legal help is relevant, and which lawyer has experience with their situation.
The website needed to help connect those questions with the firm’s services.
That meant making the practice focus clear, explaining relevant experience, and organizing information around the problems prospective clients were trying to understand.
Before deciding what content to publish, establish who it needs to help—and what they need to understand.
Give Prospective Clients a Specific Reason to Consider the Firm
The strategy focused the website on a defined set of legal problems rather than presenting an undifferentiated list of services.
The lawyer’s experience was placed in that context. The aim was to help readers understand why that experience was relevant to their situation, rather than asking them to accept broad claims about quality or dedication.
A meaningful difference does not have to be a newly named method. It can come from the combination of matters a lawyer handles, the experience brought to them, and the clients that experience is suited to helping.
A clear reason to choose you is more useful than another claim that you are better.
Connect the Client’s Problem With the Lawyer’s Expertise
The messaging consistently connected the lawyer, the firm, the practice areas, the Ontario jurisdiction, and the legal problems prospective clients were researching.
That connection matters to the person reading the page. They need to understand whether the firm handles their type of matter and what supports its suitability. It also creates explicit information that search and AI systems can interpret.
Recognize the situation
Describe the problems the firm handles in language a prospective client can understand.
Explain the relevance
Connect the lawyer’s experience with those problems rather than relying on generic credentials alone.
Support the decision
Make relevant information and the route to contacting the firm easy to find.
Build the Structure Around the Message
The implementation brought the positioning and supporting information together through focused pages, clear headings, internal links, FAQs, and structured schema.
These elements had different jobs. The pages explained the services. The links connected related information. The FAQs addressed questions. The schema described the relevant entities and relationships. The technical work supported the message being communicated to prospective clients.
Message
Clarify the practice focus and connect experience with the client’s situation.
Mechanics
Organize the pages, headings, links, FAQs, and accurate schema.
Mentions
Assess how independent references support the expertise described on the website. This is part of the framework; do not imply that a new outreach campaign was delivered for this project.
Match
Connect the information with relevant legal problems and the Ontario jurisdiction.
Could an AI System Recognize the Intended Positioning?
After completing the website, I asked Google’s Gemini to evaluate it for AI visibility. Its response identified the intended practice focus, relevant experience, and connections between the lawyer, firm, services, and jurisdiction.
This was a qualitative check of how one system interpreted the website. It was not an independent endorsement or proof that the firm would appear in recommendations.
Strategic signals recognized by Gemini:
- Topical Authority: A concentrated focus on specific legal problems.
- Niche Positioning: A clear answer to what the lawyer should be known for.
- Trust Markers: Relevant experience and credentials placed in context.
- Entity Clarity: Clear connections between the lawyer, firm and Ontario market.
- Machine-Readable Structure: Focused architecture, clear headings and structured schema.
A clear interpretation is useful feedback. Actual visibility and client activity require separate measurement.
What the Website’s Performance Data Revealed
After implementation, I examined traffic sources, visitor engagement, search performance, and website inquiries. The figures below show why total traffic alone was not enough to evaluate the website’s contribution.
Monthly performance snapshot
The Headline Traffic Number Was Only the Starting Point
A substantial share of users was attributed to Singapore, with no recorded engagement time. That pattern warranted investigation rather than being treated as evidence of prospective-client interest. Location and engagement alone do not establish that traffic was automated.
Average engagement time by city
Average engagement time. Per-user and per-session denominators are not assigned unless verified from the source report.
Organic Search Contributed a Larger Share of Engaged Sessions
Organic search accounted for fewer than one in five sessions but approximately two-thirds of engaged sessions. This shows a difference in recorded engagement, not proof that each visitor was a suitable prospect or became a client.
A Small AI Referral Sample Showed Meaningful Engagement
These figures describe the engagement recorded for identifiable AI-referred traffic. The sample is small and does not establish how many inquiries or retained matters resulted from those visits.
Referral reporting does not capture every journey influenced by AI. These sessions should not be treated as a complete count of AI-assisted discovery.
The Website Received Inquiries Related to the Firm’s Services
These are overlapping observations, not separate categories to be added together.
The submissions included people describing legal problems relevant to the firm’s services. The available data does not attribute these inquiries to a particular AI referral or search visit, and a potential matter is not the same as a retained client.
What These Results Support
What we observed
- Organic search contributed a substantial share of engaged sessions.
- Identifiable AI referrals recorded engagement with the website.
- Website forms received legitimate, practice-relevant inquiries.
What remains unproven
- Which inquiries, if any, resulted from AI referrals.
- How many inquiries became retained matters.
- How much of the observed activity was caused by an individual messaging or technical change.
- Whether another firm would achieve comparable results.

Visibility Gives Someone an Opportunity to Choose You
Content and technical tools can help deliver a message. The message still needs to give the right person a reason to pay attention, trust what they are reading, and consider contacting the firm.
This project illustrates how positioning, relevant experience, clear explanations, and website structure can be brought together around that decision.
That is the sequence behind my work: understand the client, develop the message, then build and assess its delivery.
Capture the heart. Convince the mind.
Help prospective clients recognize their situation—and understand why your firm may be relevant.
